most of the snowmen
do not have heads

they have been gored through
with shovel handles
by eight year old boys with
open flapping coats and long
dragging sleeves or
bare hands cold
from the ice,
running
and pushing
shouting and scattering
away from the
mutilated tower
that they helped
build
on a sunnier day
